Lawyer Faith Mony Odhiambo has emerged victorious in the race for the presidency of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), following a closely contested election held on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Odhiambo’s victory comes after a spirited campaign where she faced off against four other candidates, ultimately securing her position as the President-elect of the esteemed legal organization.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) released the official results, confirming Odhiambo’s win after she garnered support across various polling stations. Notably, she swept the votes at the Milimani and Supreme Court polling stations, earning 132 and 207 votes respectively. This resounding mandate from LSK members underscores the trust and confidence they have placed in Odhiambo’s leadership abilities.
Faith Odhiambo replaces Eric Theuri
Odhiambo’s ascension to the presidency marks the end of Eric Theuri’s tenure, who has diligently served as LSK president since March 2022. As the incoming president, Odhiambo is set to embark on a non-renewable two-year term, during which she aims to steer the organization towards greater heights and address the pressing issues facing Kenya’s legal fraternity.
Throughout her campaign, Odhiambo received a significant boost with the endorsement of former Prime Minister and ODM party leader Raila Odinga. Odinga’s support lent credibility to Odhiambo’s candidacy and helped galvanize further support from within the legal community and beyond.
Competing against Odhiambo were notable candidates including Peter Wanyama, Carolyne Kamende, Harriet Mboche, and Kipkoech Bernhard Ngetich. Their participation in the election reflected the diversity of voices within the legal profession and contributed to the robustness of the democratic process.
With her election as LSK president, Odhiambo assumes a weighty responsibility to uphold the principles of justice, integrity, and professionalism that the organization stands for. Additionally, her leadership will be crucial in addressing the myriad challenges facing lawyers in Kenya, including access to justice, legal reforms, and safeguarding the rule of law.
As she prepares to take office, Odhiambo expresses her gratitude to the members of LSK for their trust and support. She pledges to work tirelessly to advance the interests of the legal profession and uphold the highest standards of ethics and accountability.
Finally, in assuming the mantle of LSK presidency, Faith Mony Odhiambo embarks on a new chapter of service to the legal fraternity and the broader Kenyan society, promising to lead with dedication, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the pursuit of justice.
