Former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta made a memorable and graceful public appearance on Thursday, May 8, presiding over the Leadership Programme for County Social Transformation: Peer-to-Peer Learning and Collaboration Showcase at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) in Kabete. Her presence was met with a warm reception from attendees and a flood of praise from Kenyans online who expressed how much they missed her.
As the current head of the Beyond Zero campaign, which focuses on reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Kenya, Margaret took the opportunity to laud the efforts of county first ladies who have been instrumental in driving social change at the grassroots level. The event was designed to showcase the various initiatives led by these first ladies aimed at improving health and well-being in their communities.
Margaret praised the county first ladies for their leadership, collaboration, and commitment to transformative projects in maternal health, child welfare, and community development. The event highlighted impactful interventions, such as Agnes Ochilo’s efforts in managing sickle cell anemia in Migori County, Anita Mutula’s cancer screening programs in Makueni, and Betty Murungi’s early childhood development projects in Siaya County. Additionally, Edna Chelangat Lenku of Kajiado County presented an eco-friendly manyatta housing initiative, while Alamitu Jattani from Marsabit County discussed her work on combating FGM and teenage pregnancies.
In her address, Margaret expressed her admiration for the dedication of these county leaders, saying, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to every one of you for the transformative work you are doing to uplift the lives of women, children, and communities at large.”
Margaret’s stylish yet simple appearance at the event also caught the attention of many. She was dressed in an elegant dark blue flowing dress adorned with black patterns, complemented by a blue and golden necklace. A matching blue headwrap added a final touch of sophistication to her ensemble. She accessorized with simple earrings and rings, and her black low-heeled shoes completed the look. The photos from the function showed Margaret posing with the county first ladies and other attendees, further solidifying her position as a beloved public figure.
Margaret Kenyatta, a graduate of Kianda School, is the daughter of Njuguna Gakuo, a renowned economist and the first African managing director of Kenya Railways. Her contributions to Kenya’s social welfare system, particularly in maternal health, have earned her a special place in the hearts of many Kenyans.
Her family also continues to play an important role in the country’s development. Margaret’s three children, Jomo, Jaba, and Ngina, are well-known figures, with Jomo having recently entered public service as a member of the political arena.
Margaret’s presence at the County First Ladies’ Leadership Showcase was a reminder of the lasting impact of her work, and her call for unity and transformative leadership resonates with many Kenyans who continue to celebrate her contributions to the nation’s well-being.
