Former Machachari actor Ian Nene, popularly known as Almasi, shared a bold message this Pride Month, urging closeted gay men to embrace their truth. Through an Instagram story, Almasi encouraged men hiding their sexuality to “man up” and openly celebrate who they are, reminding followers that LGBTQ+ pride is something to be honoured throughout the year.
The actor’s post came as part of the global observance of Pride Month, celebrated every June to honour LGBTQ+ identities and commemorate the ongoing struggle for equality. In Kenya, while the constitution supports non-discrimination, legal and social barriers still hinder full acceptance and protection of LGBTQ+ individuals.
On June 9, Almasi posted a screenshot from an X user joking that everyone is assumed gay unless they explicitly state they are straight. Adding his voice, Almasi wrote: “Happy Pride Month (every month of the year).” He followed with a direct message to secretly gay men: “Man up, you homosexuals posing as straight men.”
The post reignited public speculation about Almasi’s own sexuality. He addressed this topic as early as 2017, when his fashion choices—such as wearing a nose ring and donning skirts—sparked rumours. At the time, Almasi firmly stated that only statements from him or his official platforms should be considered factual regarding his identity.
In 2024, Almasi once again drew attention when he posted a video of himself at home, proudly wearing two silver horseshoe nose rings. Critics questioned his identity, prompting the actor to respond with sharp remarks, reminding them that assumptions should not be made in the absence of his explicit confirmation. He also clarified that his pronouns remain he/him.
Almasi’s recent Pride Month post included a video of a woman complaining about gay people being annoying, which he captioned humorously as: “That time of the year.” While his messages have sparked conversations, they also reflect his advocacy for self-acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community.
Away from the online discussions, Almasi was recently spotted having fun with friends, confidently expressing himself. He arrived at a night out wearing a grey crop top and pants, later seen dancing freely at a club and sharing light moments with a close friend outside.
As Pride Month unfolds, Almasi’s message stands as a call for authenticity and courage among those still hiding their true selves. His continued advocacy highlights the importance of acceptance, not only during June but throughout the entire year.
