Kenyan media personalities Gidi and Fred Arocho have found themselves in a fiery public feud after Gidi launched a personal attack on Arocho for questioning his qualifications to vie for the Gor Mahia Secretary General seat.
The tension between the two radio heavyweights exploded after Arocho openly criticised Gidi’s interest in the club’s leadership, claiming Gidi lacked the necessary football background. According to Arocho, only individuals with firsthand football experience should manage matters at a prestigious club like Gor Mahia.
Gidi Fires Back With Brutal Academic Dig
Gidi, who co-hosts the popular Patanisho show on Radio Jambo, did not take the remarks lightly. He clapped back, calling Arocho a school dropout and ridiculing his credentials in both education and sports.
“The role of Secretary General is not about kicking a ball; it’s about leadership, organisation, and marketing,” Gidi argued during a recent broadcast. He went on to boast about his MBA and his past experience as a local goalkeeper in Dandora.
“Some of us made a choice to go to school. That’s why I’m here with a Master’s degree while others are still MCing disco matangas,” he added sharply.
Gidi also dismissed Arocho’s claims to football legend status, saying, “We have no records of your playing days. Being an MC at football events does not make you a legend.”
Arocho Claps Back from Cairo
While Gidi’s takedown dominated headlines and social media conversations for weeks, Arocho finally responded — and did so from the international stage.
Broadcasting live from Cairo, Egypt, where he was covering CAF football events, Arocho subtly but firmly hit back.
“Mnasema Arocho hakuenda shule, lakini nani ako Cairo na nani ako Nairobi?” Arocho posed with a confident smirk. “Wako busy wanapatanisha, sisi tuko very busy uwanjani.”
The jab, highlighting Arocho’s presence on global football assignments, was widely interpreted as a clear rebuttal to Gidi’s academic taunts.
Fans Take Sides
The spat has divided fans and football lovers across Kenya. Supporters of Arocho point to his deep roots in Kenyan football as a former player and seasoned broadcaster. Gidi’s defenders, meanwhile, argue that modern sports management requires more than just athletic experience — and that Gidi’s academic background could bring much-needed professionalism to the Gor Mahia office.
Arocho’s Exit from Radio Jambo
Adding another layer to the drama is Arocho’s recent departure from Radio Jambo to Radio 47, a move that reportedly came with a lucrative salary of over KSh 500,000 per month. Arocho cited better financial rewards and the need for growth as key reasons for the switch.
“I have no regrets. I left not just for money but also for a new challenge,” he said in a past interview.
As both media personalities continue with their respective careers, it remains to be seen whether the rift will affect Gidi’s bid for office or fizzle out as just another celebrity spat.
