 Angela Okutoyi made history by becoming the first Kenyan to compete in the Australian Open in January 2022.

The young sensation rose the public limelight immediately when she became the 1st girl from Kenya to win a Grand Slam juniors match on 23rd January 2022.

The Australian Open is a normally scheduled Grand Slam held annually in Melbourne, Australia.

“Being able to take part in a championship such as the Grand Slam is quite a dream.

“Its quite an experience because it only comes once a year. I am very happy and proud to be where I am,”Angella Okutoyi noted.

Interesting facts you need to know about Angella Okutoyi

  1. She developed her love for Tennis at the age of just four years
  2.  At the age of just 10 years, she joined ITF East Africa Regional Training Centre in Burundi through a tennis sponsored scholarship
  3. Her  international debut came in 2014 when she featured in the East Africa Zonal Championships where she finished second.
  4. In 2016, she returned to Nairobi and joined  ITF Training Centre at the Nairobi Club where she was trained by tennis gurus such as Thierry Ntwali, Francis Rogoi, Albert Arthur and Allan Atola.
  5. She brags of local and regional titles including singles and doubles at the East Africa Zonals Under 14, the singles at ITF Kigali Junior International Open, singles AJCCC Under-14 in Algeria, doubles winner of ITF Kigali Junior International Open.
  6. In November 2021, Okutoyi booked her spot at the tournament after winning the Africa Junior Tennis Championship (18 and Under)
  7. While back in 2018, she shocked three-time former champion Shufaa Changawa at the Britam Kenya Open Tennis Championship (Women), after beating her 6-1, 7-6 at Nairobi Club to glory
