Following the untimely death of Venice Kwamboka, a young reveller who reportedly died after being electrocuted in Diani shortly after attending the popular Summer Tides event, a video of the event’s founder, Kasey Omwanda, has resurfaced online, rekindling interest in his remarkable journey of ambition and entrepreneurship.

In the emotional clip, Kasey passionately shared how he risked it all to build Summer Tides from scratch. He revealed that he skipped university altogether, opting instead to invest his tuition money into launching what would become one of Kenya’s most talked-about beach events. His bold move has struck a chord with many online, especially in light of the recent tragedy that overshadowed what was meant to be a weekend of celebration.

Kasey’s passion for entertainment began early. He started DJing at just 12 years old and hosted his first small event at 17, attended by a few friends and family members. After high school, he was meant to pursue university studies in either the US or Canada. But instead of following a traditional path, he chose to bet on his dream, a decision he admits came with significant risk.

He shared that the name “Summer Tides” was inspired by the June-July-August school break, during which he and his friends would visit Diani. Initially, his goal was to sell 1,000 tickets to break even, but during the first trip, he only managed to sell 125. However, with time, his determination paid off and the event has since grown into a massive youth magnet, renowned for its vibrant energy and scenic coastal backdrop.

The recent resurfacing of his interview has led many to reflect on both his entrepreneurial spirit and the darker side of unregulated or high-risk events. While Kasey’s story continues to inspire a generation of dreamers, it now carries a somber undertone following the loss of Venice Kwamboka, who had just turned 19 a few months prior.

Venice’s last known TikTok video, posted in early February, shows her in a white dress and black heels, holding a birthday cake with glowing candles—a haunting reminder of her youth and the fragility of life. Her sudden death has shaken many, igniting conversations around event safety and accountability.

As tributes pour in for Venice, many are also taking a moment to appreciate the risks and sacrifices that young entrepreneurs like Kasey make in pursuit of their dreams. While Summer Tides has become a staple on the Kenyan social calendar, the tragic incident serves as a stark reminder that success must always be accompanied by responsibility.
