The tragic death of Kelvin Kiptum, the world-renowned Kenyan athlete, left a deep void not only in the sports community but also within his own family. Recently, his parents shared their struggles with the public, revealing their severe hardships after the loss of their only child. Their heart-wrenching plea for assistance has moved many Kenyans, with some expressing concern over unkept promises made during his burial.

In a candid TikTok video, Kiptum’s father, Mzee Samson Cheruiyot, opened up about the difficulties the family is facing. Despite attempting to reach out for help through social media, their efforts were blocked. “We had tried to reach out to people on social media, but it was blocked. However, we wonder if we are suffering; wouldn’t it be better if we just said it?” Cheruiyot questioned, his words laden with grief.

The family’s situation is dire. They live without basic amenities such as a toilet or a proper storage facility for their harvested maize, which is almost ready for harvesting. Kiptum’s father also disclosed that they do not have access to clean drinking water and must pay for a tractor to deliver it, a costly expense. These living conditions have taken a toll on the family, and they are now turning to Kiptum’s friends and supporters for help.

Kiptum’s mother shared her anguish, saying that if her son, the world champion, were alive, he would be horrified to see his parents living in such conditions. “I have cried so much, yet if my son, World Champion Kiptum, were here to see the kitchen, he would be shocked and wonder if it belonged to his parents,” she said, her voice shaking with emotion.

The video has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from Kenyans, with many expressing their dismay at the situation. Some users, like Charlie Charlotte, commented on the culture of unfulfilled promises in Kenya, noting that “everything is hot air.” Others, such as Shadrack Munyalo, highlighted that promises made during funerals are often not followed through. “This is not an isolated case. Few promises and pledges made during burials in Kenya have been kept,” he remarked.

The plight of Kiptum’s parents has sparked widespread conversation, with many Kenyans calling for more action to support families in need. As the public waits to see if the promises made during Kiptum’s burial will be honored, the family continues to struggle, hoping for the help they so desperately need.

Meanwhile, Kiptum’s widow, Asenath, has been coping with the loss of her husband in a dignified manner, finding solace in her faith. Despite the hardships, the strength of both Kiptum’s parents and widow is an inspiration to many who have been touched by this tragedy.

Kenyans are now hoping that Kiptum’s friends and supporters will rally together to provide the assistance his parents so urgently need. The story serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping promises and showing genuine support during times of loss.
