Renowned comedienne Eunice Mammito has faced backlash after questioning Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino’s initiative to teach mathematics online for free. The move, aimed at helping students prepare for national exams, earned widespread praise from Kenyans.
Babu Owino has a history of supporting students during exam periods. He recently shared a poster announcing free online mathematics revision classes for KSCE candidates. The gesture was intended to provide additional academic support to learners across the country.
However, Mammito expressed skepticism about the MP’s involvement in teaching. She questioned whether teaching students was part of Babu’s official duties. On her Instagram story, she also highlighted the issue of fake alcohol, recently flagged by the UK as a risk to visitors. “Why not pay teachers to do that? All I am saying is teaching students mathematics is not in his job description, yet young people are losing their lives due to fake liquor,” she wrote.
Her comments prompted swift reactions from netizens who defended Babu Owino’s efforts. Social media users reminded Mammito about the broader role of MPs and the value of giving back to society.
Babu Owino, who holds over six diplomas and four degree certificates, has previously emphasized the importance of education. He has encouraged university students to graduate and stated that those who fail to complete their studies are no different from Form Four dropouts. His remarks on education and the value of a degree have sparked both criticism and support online.
Through his free online classes, Babu Owino continues to provide practical academic assistance, demonstrating the positive role politicians can play in society beyond legislative duties.
