Collins Omondi Okello, a Kisumu-based artist, has officially copyrighted his viral tribute artwork of Raila Odinga. The image, featuring Raila’s silhouette against a vibrant orange sky, gained national attention following his death in October 2025.
Originally created as a personal homage, the artwork was widely shared without proper attribution, prompting Okello to secure exclusive commercial rights. He expressed frustration over unauthorized use by businesses and individuals, emphasizing that the piece was never intended for profit but as a tribute to a leader he admired.
To address the misuse, Okello registered the image with the Kenya Copyright Board, giving him full control over its commercial use. He highlighted the importance of protecting creative works in the digital age and encouraged fellow artists to watermark their creations and seek legal protection to prevent unauthorized exploitation.
Okello also invites the public to support his work through proper acknowledgment and contributions. His decision to copyright the artwork secures his rights and sets a precedent for artists in Kenya, emphasizing the need for recognition and respect of intellectual property.
