Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty N Maina is once again under fire after a leaked audio clip allegedly capturing her issuing threats against Nginda Ward MCA Mwangi wa Mapesa surfaced online. The recording, which went viral on Sunday, July 27, has thrown social media into a frenzy, with many Kenyans questioning the conduct and temperament of the sitting legislator.
In the explosive audio clip, a voice believed to be that of Betty Maina is heard furiously confronting Mwangi, launching into a tirade filled with expletives, personal attacks, and chilling threats. The speaker, alternating between English and Kikuyu, warns the MCA not to cross her path, even daring him to record and report her to any authority he chooses.
“You have spoken about beans, but I have not spoken about WaMaua. If I target you, I will dismantle you… Go away. I am going to dismantle you and you know I do not mince my words. You are going to know me. And you can record and take it to your grandmother, or to the police, or wherever you want. I have dared you,” the voice rants, also mocking the MCA’s age and masculinity.
The incident reportedly stems from a church event the two leaders attended. Speaking on a live call with Kameme FM’s Muthoni wa Kirumba, Mwangi wa Mapesa narrated how a seemingly innocent remark may have triggered the confrontation. During his address at the church, Mwangi questioned the county’s approach to empowerment initiatives, particularly criticizing the overuse of token handouts such as beans instead of focusing on more sustainable solutions like investing in education.
“I simply said funds being used in these so-called empowerment programmes should instead go towards improving the education sector,” Mwangi explained. He said that although he never directly mentioned Maina’s name, she called him shortly after the service, clearly enraged and accusing him of attacking her personally.
Mwangi claims Maina warned him not to speak about “beans” again, equating the term with her initiatives. He told the radio host that he did not respond to the threats but felt compelled to speak out for the sake of accountability and transparency in leadership.
As of the time of publication, Betty Maina had not issued any public statement addressing the leaked audio or the allegations made by the MCA.
The audio leak has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users condemned the language and tone used, calling it unbefitting of a public servant, while others viewed it as evidence of deeper tensions within the local political landscape. A section of netizens called for disciplinary action, while others questioned whether such leadership serves the interests of the people.
One user commented, “Who does she think she is… calling other elected leaders such names?” while another added, “If this is how our leaders handle criticism, then we’re in trouble.” Others made light of the situation with remarks like, “She’s now singing ‘It Wasn’t Me’ by Shaggy,” hinting at possible denial.
The controversy is the latest in a string of public altercations involving the Woman Representative, who has frequently drawn attention for her combative style. With the 2027 elections on the horizon and growing calls for accountability from voters, this latest scandal may have a significant impact on her political image in the Mount Kenya region.
Whether or not Betty Maina chooses to address the allegations, the leaked audio has once again spotlighted the need for civility, maturity, and respect in public office. As Kenyans continue to dissect the clip, it remains to be seen how the matter will evolve—and what consequences, if any, will follow.
