Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has shared an intimate account of her struggles with uterine fibroids, revealing the scale of her experience and the emotional toll it has taken over the years. Nyong’o disclosed that she has had 77 fibroids, with 25 surgically removed and over 50 still growing inside her. She described the tumours as ranging from the size of a small blueberry to as large as an orange, highlighting the physical challenges she has endured. Fibroids are noncancerous growths in the uterus that can cause severe symptoms, including prolonged periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, constipation, frequent urination, and fatigue. By speaking publicly, Nyong’o is shedding light on a condition that affects millions of women but is often misunderstood or dismissed.

Nyong’o discussed the mental and emotional impact of her condition in a recent interview with ABC News Live Prime. She revealed that she initially felt shame and questioned her body, wondering if she had failed to protect or care for it. For years, she battled her symptoms privately while maintaining a public image at work, red carpet events, and film roles. She described enduring long periods, severe clotting, and fatigue that led to pre-anaemia, demonstrating how physically draining fibroids can be. Through her story, Nyong’o emphasized the societal expectation that women silently endure pain and discomfort, often from adolescence, without being taught to observe or advocate for their own health.

Nyong’o’s openness also serves as a call to action for women to prioritize their bodies and seek timely medical attention. She highlighted that, despite the prevalence of fibroids, treatment options have remained largely unchanged over the past decade, often limited to invasive surgery or living with the pain. Her advocacy through the #MakeFibroidsCount campaign seeks to fund research for improved treatments and raise awareness about the widespread impact of the condition. By sharing her personal journey, Nyong’o is encouraging women to speak openly about their experiences, reduce stigma, and push for medical advancements that address the needs of those affected.

The actress also underscored the importance of recognizing the unseen struggles many women face. She explained that the silent endurance of pain can lead to unnecessary suffering and delays in seeking care. Nyong’o’s story resonates widely, prompting discussions about reproductive health, mental wellbeing, and the societal pressures placed on women. Public reactions to her revelations have been overwhelmingly supportive, with many women expressing gratitude for her courage in highlighting an issue that is often hidden or trivialized. Her testimony has sparked a broader conversation on how to better support women dealing with similar health challenges.

Through her candid disclosure, Lupita Nyong’o has turned a personal challenge into an opportunity to educate and empower others. Her advocacy not only raises awareness about uterine fibroids but also challenges societal norms around women’s health and the silence surrounding reproductive conditions. By combining her platform with actionable campaigns like #MakeFibroidsCount, she is helping create a space for research, dialogue, and support. Nyong’o’s experience serves as a reminder of the importance of observing one’s body, seeking care, and fostering a culture where women’s health is prioritized and openly discussed. Her story is a powerful step toward dismantling stigma and advancing solutions for women worldwide.
