Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has joined Kenyans in mourning the passing of former prime minister Raila Odinga, paying tribute to his legacy and his close friendship with her father, Kisumu governor Anyang Nyong’o. She described Raila as a hero to the nation and a personal friend of her family, highlighting the deep connection between the Odinga and Nyong’o families.

In an Instagram post, Lupita reminisced about the moments her family shared with Raila, noting how they were involved in each other’s celebrations and milestones. She wrote, “I join Kenyans in mourning the passing of the great Hon. Raila Odinga. I knew him from up close as one of my father’s dearest friends, and also as a hero to the nation. He was there for my dad and for our family in our moments of celebration and of grief. He shared our family’s milestones and we shared his. Here is my father’s statement that so beautifully puts into words his love, respect and admiration for a man who gave us so much of himself. Rest in peace, Uncle Raila. My comfort to the whole Odinga family as they come to terms with this monumental loss.”

Lupita also emphasized Raila’s role as a unifying figure in Kenya. She praised his statesmanship, noting that despite numerous challenges, he worked to keep the country together. Her tribute reflected both personal loss and national mourning, recognizing Raila’s impact on Kenyan history and politics.

Alongside her message, Lupita shared a photo of her father and Raila at a past function, showing the two leaders in conversation, capturing the warmth and respect of their long-standing friendship.

Her heartfelt post underlined the personal and national significance of Raila Odinga’s passing, highlighting the enduring relationships and legacies he leaves behind.
