Martial changed his Facebook profile picture to a promotional image for his website, which has the insignia ‘am9’ emblazoned on it, at the weekend.
The 20-year-old also switched his cover photo to a picture taken of him from behind during the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, where the No.9 is visible. Martial’s handle on the social media site is also ‘@AnthonyMartialAM9’.
Martial, arguably United’s best outfield player last season, has inherited the No.11 shirt Adnan Januzaj flunked in to accommodate the arrival of Ibrahimovic.
The Sweden legend claimed this week he ‘chose’ the number nine and Martial’s productive wing play has convinced Mourinho he is worthier of 11 than Januzaj.
Martial hinted in March he prefers to play on the flank and he could continue there following the squad number change.
“I am a striker but I love playing wide,” Martial said. “The main thing is wherever I play I enjoy it and help the team.
“I must continue to work hard in training. I need to think more like a goalscorer, sometimes I get so immersed in the game because I love general play so much.
“Someone like Cristiano Ronaldo focuses on scoring to progress, so perhaps I need to think more about scoring.”
Marcus Rashford’s impact up front did not blunt Martial, who scored seven goals in 16 games after the Wythenshawe teenager’s debut.
