Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko recently found himself in a perplexing situation when a young man from Busia approached him for financial assistance. The man, identified as Kevin, had ambitions of pursuing a medicine course at the University of Nairobi but lacked the necessary funds to actualize his dream. Seeking help, he reached out to Sonko via WhatsApp, requesting support with his school fees.

In his initial message, Kevin politely appealed to Sonko, expressing his desire to join the university but acknowledging his financial constraints. However, as time passed without receiving a response, Kevin’s demeanour shifted from patience to frustration. He began sending multiple messages to Sonko, urging him to respond and assist him with his education expenses.

Leaders, sometimes we face challenges ourselves. When Sonko failed to reply promptly, Kevin’s disappointment turned into anger, leading him to record a voice note in which he expressed his displeasure and criticized Sonko for not helping him. This act of venting his frustration through insults caught Sonko’s attention, prompting him to reach out to Kevin directly via phone call.

During their conversation, Sonko questioned Kevin about his use of insults and asked him if that was an appropriate way to seek help. In response, Kevin claimed that his phone had been taken by someone else who sent the disrespectful voice note. Despite this explanation, Sonko remained calm and assured Kevin that he would look into the matter.

Subsequently, Mike Sonko took to social media to share his experience and seek opinions from the public regarding the incident. He highlighted the challenges he faced, including being jobless with frozen accounts and struggling businesses, yet still striving to assist those in need.

Finally, the situation serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in philanthropic efforts and the importance of maintaining respectful communication, even in moments of frustration and desperation.
