Azimio Coalition, led by National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, made a significant announcement on Saturday, March 30, indicating their readiness to momentarily halt political rivalries and collaborate with the Kenya Kwanza government. This collaboration aims to pass a supplementary budget intended to resolve the ongoing doctors’ strike, which has precipitated a healthcare emergency across Kenya.

Addressing the public in Lugari Constituency, Wandayi emphasized the urgency of cooperation between the ruling coalition and the opposition to resolve the deadlock. He suggested that President William Ruto should take the lead in negotiations to bring an end to the strike, recognizing the gravity of the situation.

“The doctors’ strike is a critical issue that cannot be ignored. If budgetary constraints are hindering a resolution, we should convene Parliament promptly and propose a supplementary budget,” stated Wandayi, advocating for decisive measures.

During his address to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, who was present at the event, Wandayi urged swift action, emphasizing the necessity of recalling Parliament from recess to pass the supplementary budget. This budget would facilitate the hiring of medical interns and provide incentives for doctors, essential steps toward resolving the crisis.

Acknowledging Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha’s efforts, Wandayi noted her commitment but suggested that President Ruto’s intervention was now imperative. Additionally, he proposed that President Ruto lead negotiations with the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution.

Furthermore, Wandayi tasked President Ruto with rallying Kenya Kwanza MPs to support the supplementary budget once it’s presented in Parliament. This collaborative effort aims to alleviate the strain on the healthcare system caused by the prolonged strike, now in its third week.

In response, Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha expressed gratitude for Wandayi’s proposal and pledged to collaborate with Parliament to resolve the crisis swiftly. She reaffirmed her commitment to working with legislators from all sides to advocate for policies that enhance the country’s healthcare standards.

Finally, the announcement by the Azimio Coalition, spearheaded by Wandayi, reflects a crucial step towards bipartisan cooperation in addressing pressing national issues, particularly the healthcare crisis precipitated by the doctors’ strike. The willingness to set aside political differences underscores the paramount importance of prioritizing public health and well-being above all else.
