The motion by MCA for Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course ward, Mwangi Njihia to stop commercial sex business in the Nairobi city was passed on Friday.

The motion had received a much needed support to pass it where other MCAs requested Governor Mike Sonko to move first and cub the ever rising menace.

What does the law say about commercial sex in Kenya?

The penal code  criminalises aspects of prostitution, stating that: “153(1) Every male person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of prostitution or in any public place persistently solicits or importunes for immoral purposes, is guilty of a misdemeanor…”

It adds that: “(2) Every woman who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of prostitution, or who is proved to have, for the purpose of gain, exercised control, direction or influence over the movements of a prostitute in such a manner as to show that she is aiding, abetting or compelling her prostitution with any person, or generally, is guilty of a felony.”

Over the last 20 years brothels have mushroomed and spread across the Nairobi city slums and in the streets of the CBD despite the fact that it has been a illegal business.

To add salt on the pitch, prostitutes have turned into robbers who steal large sums of money from their unsuspecting criminals
