Popular Mugithi artist Raj Banema is mourning the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Josephine Wairimu, who passed away on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, after a short illness. The emotional announcement was made through his official Facebook page, where the musician shared his devastation and grief with fans and friends.

Raj Banema, whose real name is David Karanja, described Josephine as the anchor of his life, paying tribute to her unwavering love, warmth, and strength that brought joy and unity to their home.

“I am heartbroken to share that my beloved wife, Josephine Wairimu, passed away on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, after a short illness,” he wrote. “I am still in shock at the sudden loss of the person I loved, cherished, and built our life around. Her kindness, laughter, and unwavering strength filled our home with joy and I will carry her memory with me always.”

In the deeply moving tribute, Raj promised to honour her memory by raising their child, Keith Banema, in the same love and spirit that Josephine embodied.

“Though she has gone from our sight, she leaves behind our precious baby, Keith Banema, whom I will love and protect with all my heart, now and for infinity. I promise to honour her legacy every day by raising our child in the warmth of her spirit and love,” he shared.

He also extended heartfelt gratitude to fans and the public for their support: “Thank you for your prayers, support, and understanding during this unimaginably difficult time. Your compassion means more than words can say.”

Raj Banema has grown into one of the most recognisable figures in Kenya’s Mugithi music scene, known for his exceptional guitar work and heartfelt reinterpretations of both gospel and secular classics. His unique ability to blend traditional Kikuyu melodies with modern musical flair has made him a beloved name across the country.

He first went viral with humorous covers of songs inspired by controversial preacher Pastor James Ng’ang’a, earning attention for his creativity and bold delivery. However, it was his emotional rendition of ‘Airitu a Ndeiya’—originally performed by the Super Ndeiya Band—that solidified his place in the spotlight, racking up over 3 million views on YouTube.

Other notable tracks like ‘Kururia Wega’ and ‘Niciumbarane’ have further cemented his influence in the Mugithi genre, leading to multiple bookings and appearances on popular media platforms.

As he navigates this painful chapter, Raj Banema remains surrounded by love from fans, fellow artists, and the wider community. His story is one of talent, love, and resilience, now marked by deep personal loss.
