Media personality Oga Obinna has addressed a viral clip showing him seemingly dismissing his production manager during a live recording of his show, clarifying that the moment was driven by frustration and not an actual termination.
Speaking on Episode 308 of the Mic Cheque Podcast, Obinna recounted the incident, which occurred while hosting guest Gaucho. He explained that the confusion began when an unknown individual walked onto the set while cameras were rolling and plugged in his phone to an extension controlling the set lighting. The intrusion immediately broke Obinna’s concentration.
“Behind Gaucho on this couch, because the camera was on me, I see some dude just walks in and starts plugging his phone on the extension that is behind this seat,” Obinna said. The extension was sensitive, making the interference a potential disruption to the live broadcast.
Obinna’s frustration escalated when he noticed key members of his team were not at their posts. “I’m like ‘Yo Munez,’ Munez is not at his station… then the next thing I think, ‘Where is my production manager?’ Because this is the work of the production manager, to check the set… the production manager is not around,” he said. He later discovered that the manager was occupied with unrelated tasks during the episode.
Feeling responsible for managing the set himself, Obinna admitted that he reacted emotionally. The cameras captured him saying, “Ok, I think my production manager is just fired because clearly we don’t need you, so we either get someone better or since we’re already flying without you…” He stressed that this statement was not serious and did not constitute an actual firing.
“But I did not have that conversation with him after, not even during, that thing just passed. I just said it as a by-the-way. I didn’t really mean he’s fired,” Obinna clarified. He described his reaction as human, explaining, “I felt disappointed, I felt confused… we have moments of misjudgment, and we are emotional beings.”
The intruding individual later turned out to be a guest accompanying Gaucho. After the show, he was formally introduced, resolving the brief misunderstanding. The incident highlights the pressures of live broadcasting and the challenges media personalities face when unexpected disruptions occur on set. Obinna’s explanation underscores that the viral moment was a heat-of-the-moment reaction rather than a professional decision.
