Popular Mugithi singer Samuel Muchoki, better known as Samidoh, has honoured the memory of the late John DeMathew on the sixth anniversary of his passing. DeMathew, regarded as one of the greatest Mugithi icons, died in 2019 following a tragic road accident along the Thika–Nairobi Highway.
Samidoh shared a heartfelt message on social media, posting throwback photos of himself performing alongside DeMathew during his early years in music. He described DeMathew as a mentor whose influence shaped his career and Mugithi as a whole.
“Six years since we lost you, but your voice and spirit still live on in our hearts. Last night during our show, we took an hour to honour your memory and celebrate the legacy you left behind for Mugithi and our culture. Continue resting in peace legend, John DeMathew, your music will never fade,” Samidoh wrote.
Beyond his online tribute, Samidoh and fellow Mugithi artists dedicated part of their weekend performance to celebrate DeMathew’s life. Fans at the event joined in song, proving that the late singer’s music continues to resonate deeply.
DeMathew’s untimely death shocked the music fraternity in 2019 when his car collided with a lorry near Blue Post. His passing left a void in Mugithi, but his extensive catalogue of songs remains a cornerstone of the genre.
Samidoh’s tribute triggered a wave of nostalgic messages from fans online. Many shared how DeMathew’s music impacted their lives. One fan wrote, “His songs are worth listening even while the entire family is around the dining table. You can’t feel ashamed. Rest in peace, you didn’t die, you transformed.” Another added, “Six years may have passed but your impact on Mugithi and our culture will forever be felt. Your music changed lives.”
Others described DeMathew as a teacher whose lyrics carried life lessons, while some expressed a desire to remake his music to ensure future generations appreciate his artistry.
John DeMathew’s family also marked the anniversary in a personal way. His second wife, Carolyne, visited his grave with their children, laying roses in his honour. She thanked her support system for standing by her over the past six years and helping her raise the children.
Samidoh’s tribute, along with Carolyne’s gesture, highlights the enduring influence of John DeMathew. His music continues to inspire fans and musicians, reinforcing his status as a legend whose legacy will outlive generations.
