John Pombe Magufuli was recently sworn in as President of Tanzania after winning the October 2015 presidential election and was sworn in on 5 November 2015, something not very common in Africa largely because most leaders ehhh…. do not like to step down. This smooth transition was widely celebrated and quite topical but what has been more topical are his cost cutting measures that has the whole continent talking.
President John Magufuli has cancelled independence day celebrations, and has ordered a clean-up campaign instead. It would be “shameful” to spend huge sums of money on the celebrations when “our people are dying of cholera”, he said, state television reported. This is one of the many changes he has sought to help direct funds in sectors in dire need of resources and focus. His outstanding effort as expected was not immune to meme and social media hype.
