To the Freshers 2014,

First my congratulations for making it to the highest institution of learning.

Next, a few things I want to bring to your attention;

1. Apply for Helb. Even if you think you don’t need it, your parents do.

2. The monies you will be given as you join college is for YOUR UPKEEP (and boys this is for you), that girl has her share. No point trying to impress her with yours, that is an exercise in futility .

3. Your primary role in college is to study.Whatever you do, give adequate attention to you studies. On this you are entirely on your own. Missing a cat, exams or failing to submit assignments is gross,the full implications of which you will only know when you get a supp or have to rewind a year.

4. Everyone will want sex for literally every aspect of your campus life,from your professors to the janitors, your comrades,senators, governors, mama mbogas, taxi guys, MCAs name them. Bodies too go through wear and tear ,and choices have consequences. But most importantly, we don’t want to know just how much of it you are having.

5. Girls you are going to campus (we assume) to get degrees.Not babies. Babies will mess it all up for you. Because you see, first you will be thrown out of the hostel. Then you will miss several classes and most probably fall back a year or two. Babies are expensive. Babies are extremely demanding.Once you have a baby you become a mother, which kinda of changes the dynamics. But the worst part is that guys don’t get pregnant, actually they have this habit of going underground just when it begins to show. Oh, and abortions are extremely risky.

6. Drugs are dangerous. Drugs are drugs,irrespective of what fancy names or packages they are given. Your body is no laboratory.Again choices have consequences.

7. Please gather some knowledge & skills in your area of study (and in general knowledge if you can). Which means attend a good percentage of your lectures. You may have mastered all the tricks of stealing exams but remember there will be the world thereafter.Try to match what is in your papers to what is in your head.

8. Lastly: Have fun. This will be the best part of your life. The peak. You are young,energetic, sharp, beautiful.No teachers breathing down your neck, no responsibilities of adulthood, everyone thinking very highly of you because you are in campo, enjoy it.

Make friends, join those trips to wherever,pursue a hobby or two, exploit that hidden talent, polish up on your social skills, dress up once in a while and give us a glimpse of what to expect when you graduate. The intellectual.

Thank you.
