Oloolua Nature Trail:
Meandering through thick forest vines and undergrowth below giant indigenous tree and bushes. It is located in the up market suburb of Karen. 250 hectares of indigenous tropical it is home to the Institute of primate research. It is open every day of the week at 9AM to 6PM. It’s Ksh 200 for citizens/students, 400 for residents and 600 for non-residents.
Nairobi Arboretum:
Tracing its way to the construction of the Kenya Uganda Railway, it was established in 1907 as a hub to rare quick growing exotic softwoods that would meet the train’s fuel needs. Today it’s a nature paradise consisting of 30 hectare forest reserve holding over 350 species of indigenous and exotic plants. It is also a haven for over a 100 species of birds making it an ultimate relaxation spot. Situated 3KM from the city center along state house road, it is open to the public.
Central Park:
Mostly mistaken to be an extension of the iconic Uhuru Park. It is adjacent to Uhuru Highway behind Serena hotel. It also hosts the Kanu monument which was constructed in 1988 to celebrate 10 years of former president Moi’s rule. What makes it a perfect choice are its expansive lawns and well maintained gardens interspersed with shade trees.
Nairobi City Market:
Established in 1921 as a zoological garden, the place is indigenous with a myriad of species rocking about 988 species of flora and fauna. Popular with family outings, it also maintains a large tree and plant nursery in the park with a sale yard where members of the public can buy plants.
Uhuru Park:
This has to be the most iconic place in the whole of Nairobi and holds great historical heritage. It is for example the scene where Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai led to a protest against Moi’s decision to construct a 62 storey building. It has well laid out lawns, a lake and a myriad of sporting activities for kids.
