The UoN senate has expelled 33 students, including Mike Jacobs, over violent protests that led to the closure of the University two weeks ago. 25 students have also been suspended for a period of two to three years, 17 pardoned and 143 issued with warnings. The students were protesting Babu Owino’s re-election as the SONU Chairman.
Babu has been at the helm of SONU since 2014 and it is alleged to have defeated Mike Jacobs by engaging in malpractices during the elections. More than 200 students were suspended for allegedly participating in the protests despite warnings from the administration.
During the Friday press briefing, Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi said the independent election petitions panel had receive 17 petitions arising from the 2016 student union elections. He noted that the panel had heard and already finalised four petitions and was in the process of writing rulings on 12 while one had not yet started.
“A complete report will be tabled at a senate meeting next week” he added.
According to Mbithi, lights have been installed at the he university’s halls of residence which was burnt down during the riots and the building repaired.
The University is scheduled to open on 25th April and 3rd May for the College of Health Sciences – Level 5 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and the rest of the students who were in session before the closure on April 5 respectively.
