The United States Embassy in Nairobi has recently issued a security alert concerning the residential estates within Nairobi County. This alert, dated Friday, March 15, 2024, comes in response to a noticeable increase in incidents of insecurity within these areas, particularly related to phone and purse snatching.

The US embassy tells citizens to hide jewellery

The embassy’s advisory includes several precautionary measures aimed at enhancing the safety of American citizens and other residents. One of the key pieces of advice is for individuals to maintain a low profile and avoid displaying signs of wealth, such as expensive jewellery or flashing large sums of money. Additionally, residents are urged to keep valuables like phones concealed to minimize the risk of theft.

Furthermore, the embassy emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and aware of one’s surroundings. It advised against confronting individuals attempting to rob or snatch belongings, as such confrontations often escalate into violence. Instead, residents are encouraged to remain calm and avoid physical resistance during robbery attempts.

In light of the security alert, the embassy did not specify the particular estates experiencing the surge in criminal activity. However, it did mention that the Kenyan government is taking steps to deploy more police officers in high-crime areas to address the situation.

The embassy’s advisory aligns with recent data from the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC), which highlights the prevalent types of crimes in Nairobi. According to the NCRC survey, housebreaking, general stealing, theft of stock, burglary, stealing from a person, stealing from a building, robbery with violence, and theft of farm produce are among the most common crimes reported.

Additionally, the survey indicates that crime victimization is often influenced by factors such as economic status, gender, and age. It also notes that while specific days like Saturdays and Sundays see higher rates of crime, there is no definitive pattern, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance and precaution regardless of the day.

In conclusion, the security advisory from the US Embassy serves as a reminder for residents to prioritize their safety by adopting preventive measures and remaining cautious in their daily activities, especially within Nairobi’s residential estates.
