President William Ruto presided over a celebratory event in Nairobi on May 20, 2025, as he officially handed over 1,080 newly completed social housing units in the New Mukuru Estate. The colourful ceremony, held at the Mukuru Meteorological Site, brought together leaders, citizens and top Kenyan artistes who added rhythm and energy to the momentous occasion.
Among those who took to the stage were celebrated gospel artistes Mercy Masika and Piston. Their joint performance resonated deeply with the theme of the day — hope, progress, and a shared future. The duo’s powerful vocals were accompanied by uplifting lyrics encouraging unity and resilience, with one of the lines echoing the call to action: “Tujenge pamoja, tuanze kutenda, watoto wetu wasikose mahali pa kwenda.”
However, it was the energetic group Wadagliz that truly brought the event to life. The artists performed their popular hit Anguka Nayo, prompting President Ruto himself to join in the dance from the podium. As the beat dropped, the president, along with other leaders including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Nairobi Senator Karen Nyamu, joined in the festivities. The impromptu dance-off delighted the crowd and underscored the celebratory spirit of the day.
Adding a touch of humour and creativity to the programme, comedians Henry Desagu, Sleepy David, and Teacher Wanjiku also performed a skit that creatively highlighted the significance of the government’s housing initiative and the need for collective responsibility in building a better Kenya.
The event marked the commissioning of the first phase of the New Mukuru Housing Estate, part of the government’s Affordable Housing Programme. The development is Kenya’s largest real estate project to date, with a total of 13,248 units planned. The estate promises better living conditions for low-income families, offering modern housing with improved sanitation, infrastructure and security.
President Ruto reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering more than 200 similar projects across the country, noting that over 200,000 youth are already employed in the housing programme. He described the event as not just a ceremonial handover, but a historic moment in his political career and a step toward transforming lives through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
As music, laughter, and applause filled the air in Mukuru, it was evident that this event was more than just a housing launch — it was a celebration of dignity, opportunity, and the power of community in building the Kenya of tomorrow.
