Kenyan actress and creative professional Wanjiku Stephens has shared new insights into her journey in fashion and entertainment, revealing how her passion for styling began in childhood and later shaped her career path. Many Kenyans know her from her breakout role as Vanessa in the popular television drama Maria, but her work behind the scenes in fashion tells a deeper story of creativity and long-term dedication. She explains that her love for fashion started at a young age while growing up in Kagere, Ugaciku sub-location in Othaya, Nyeri County. Her mother played a central role in nurturing that passion by teaching her how to mix outfits and reimagine clothing for different occasions. These early lessons laid the foundation for what would later become both a personal passion and a professional identity.

Before becoming a well-known actress, Wanjiku Stephens built experience in modelling and styling, roles that helped her understand fashion from both creative and practical perspectives. She has stated that styling has always been her strongest passion and remains the core of her career. According to her, working in modelling first gave her exposure to presentation, posture and visual storytelling, which later translated into her styling work. She eventually transitioned into acting, but she never abandoned her work in fashion. Instead, she continued to grow in the industry while balancing both careers. This combination of acting and styling has allowed her to develop a unique professional identity in Kenya’s creative industry.

Over the years, Wanjiku Stephens has worked on several high-profile projects that have strengthened her reputation as a stylist. One of her most notable collaborations has been with media personality Lulu Hassan, with whom she has worked for more than seven years. She describes this partnership as both challenging and rewarding, noting that it has pushed her to continuously refine her creative approach. Her work with Lulu Hassan includes styling for major productions such as the Lulu Show and Zari on DStv. She has also contributed to major commercial campaigns for brands such as Downy and Woolworths, where her styling expertise played a key role in shaping visual presentation. Each project has helped her expand her skills and build a strong portfolio in the fashion industry.

Wanjiku Stephens has also spoken openly about the skills required to succeed as a professional stylist. She emphasizes creativity, attention to detail and a strong understanding of colour coordination as essential foundations in the field. Communication skills also play a major role, especially when working with clients who have different preferences and expectations. She believes that fashion knowledge must be combined with patience and adaptability in order to deliver consistent results across different projects. According to her experience, staying updated with fashion trends is also critical because the industry changes quickly and demands constant learning. These skills have helped her remain competitive and effective in her work across different platforms.

Despite her success, Wanjiku acknowledges that criticism is part of her professional journey. She views feedback as an indicator that her work is being noticed and taken seriously. Rather than discouraging her, constructive criticism motivates her to improve and refine her craft. She also highlights that working in fashion often involves handling unexpected challenges, including last-minute styling emergencies. To manage these situations, she always prepares backup options to ensure smooth execution during important events or shoots. This level of preparation has helped her maintain reliability in a fast-paced industry where timing and presentation are critical.

Wanjiku Stephens continues to balance her acting career with her growing influence in fashion styling and design. Her journey reflects a steady evolution from childhood passion to professional success built on discipline, creativity and continuous learning. She remains committed to expanding her work in both entertainment and fashion while maintaining the values that shaped her early interest in style. Her story highlights how personal passion, when developed with consistency and skill, can grow into a sustainable and impactful career in multiple industries.
