Child modelling is a sensitive topic, we see mini supermodels everywhere – billboards, catalogues, TV ads and in-store at our favourite retailers. And most of us think – ‘my kids could do that’.
But the process is not for the faint hearted. Also you have to deal with the fact the minute that first shot is taken, your child’s privacy is out the door. So if you are gonna do it, do it right. If you think your child has what it takes to make it in the glamorous world of child modelling, we’ve put together a guide to help you get your little one on the right track
1. Research, research, research – Get the right agency
Agencies can be really shifty, especially the ones that are big and therefor feel they have not much to lose. Make sure you read those contracts thoroughly and are armed with a lawyer just in case.
2. Always be prepared with as many professional shots of your child as possible.
This will help the agency know what look looks like what and also go a long way in identifying the versatility of your child, it will help the client get to his decision much quicker.
3. Personality will always always win over looks. Both? Even better.
Its not enough your child looks cute and cuddly, they must be ready to adapt to any kind of work (sad, happy, exciting) and do it in their own unique way. A good way to go about this would be to do a couple of exercises with him/her, watch tv shows with child presenters in them, ask them questions like in trivia and get to talking. It will be good for them.
4. Missing school
The media world can be very shifty and might need some odd hours of work from your child, be sure to be prepared to fill the gap when need be. Arrange for extra tutoring, or organise a home schooling method for him/her if need be. School must always be a priority.
5. Self esteem issues
With children they tend to take things very personally especially with issues concerning their abilities, it is important to prepare your child and let them know before hand that no matter the outcome of the auditions and photoshoots and test runs, they are still amazing in every way possible.
6. Commercial modelling or runway modelling?
Child modelling in Kenya is split runway and commercial. It is important to know that most agencies place much emphasis on commercial modelling than runway, runway jobs are scarce and pay less, commercial modelling has better rewards mostly because it is sponsored by huge companies, the age limit for commercial modelling is also much much lower.
