Foetal movement is an indicator of the baby’s well-being
Counting foetal movements from week 28 can be beneficial for all pregnancies, especially in the case of high-risk pregnancies.
Sometimes the doctor may ask you to count how many times you feel your baby’s movements for 1 and 2 hours.
How much a baby has
to move during pregnancy How is a count of foetal movements made?
It is usually recommended to have one side (preferably the left side) and count how long it takes for the baby to make 10 movements.
If it takes less than 2 hours, the result is considered normal.
If you do not perceive enough movements, it does not mean that there is a problem
The baby may be sleeping. Try to awaken it by slapping it in the air, with a gentle push on your belly or drinking something cold.
It is important to focus on the movements of the baby.
A number that is commonly used is 10 movements in an hour, and you have to account for any type of movement such as strokes, kicks, turns, etc.
The time of day does not really matter, but it is more common to feel more activity in the afternoon, at night or after a meal.
Choose a time of the day when you have time and know that your baby is active.
The babies are usually most active from 9: 00-1: 00 am, as your level of blood sugar is falling.
When should I see a
doctor?
The number of foetal movements can vary from day to day, but most of the days should be similar.
It is also normal that as the weeks of pregnancy progress, the movements are less frequent.
The most important thing is to take into account when there is a significant and lasting reduction in the normal activity of the baby. If this happens, and you’re worried, do not hesitate to see the doctor.
You must go to the maternity emergency directly when:
- Do not notice your baby’s movements during a day. If this happens, you will NEVER wait until the next day.
- If the baby is normally active moves less than 10 times during two hours.
