The Coastal police commissioner, Nelson Marwa has challenged the youths to play their role in the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism. While addressing the media, the police commissioner sought the help of all the youths in Kilifi, Mombasa, Lamu and even Kwale in the fight against this menace that is in the rise in the region. This was after a meeting that was held with chiefs from this county to try and curb drug trafficking in the region.
“Vijana katika maeneo haya wanafaa kusaidia serikali kuwakamata hawa walanguzi (The youths have to help the government identify and arrest these drug traffickers),” he said.
“Use your smartphones and take photos or even videos of those you feel are peddling drugs and post them on social media for us to see and take action,” he continued.
He also revealed that two people have been arrested after a police raid in Shanzu in connection with Al Shaabab.
The coastal region has been identified as the hiding destination for most drug barons and terrorists who then travel to the other parts of the country. The police commissioner’s revelations that a good number of those missing are university students prove the extent to which the cream is being targeted.
This seems to be the current trend being taken by Al Shaabab as a former University of Nairobi student, Mohammed Abdullahi, was claimed to be have lead the Garissa attack that left more than 140 dead. Many people claim unemployment is the key factor that is prompting graduates to join drug trafficking and terrorist groups in the region.
