10 Drugs To Avoid During Pregnancy

Being expectant and pregnant is one of the most cutest feeling for many mothers who planned for it.

However, sometimes we might not be ready to read between the lines. Here are some drugs to avoid during pregnancy.

Tetracycline


Tetracycline can harm the fetus. It affects the bone & teeth development of the baby. It can also cause the teeth of your child to be permanently yellow-stained.

Chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol drug is known to cause gray baby syndrome and serious blood disorders.

Ciprofloxacin


Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Taking the drug during pregnancy increase the risk of miscarriage.
It could cause problems with the baby’s muscle and skeletal growth as well as joint pain and potential nerve damage in the mother

Ibuprofen


Taking high doses of this drug can have dangerous consequences on pregnant mothers like; miscarriage, delayed onset of labor, jaundice, and it can increase the risk of hemorrhage for both mother and baby, low levels of amniotic fluid and abnormal vitamin K levels

Clonazepam and Lorazepam


Clonazepam (Klonopin) is used to prevent seizures and panic disorders. It’s sometimes prescribed to treat anxiety attacks or panic attacks.
Taking clonazepam during pregnancy can lead to withdrawal symptoms in newborns.

Warfarin


Warfarin (Coumadin) is a blood thinner that’s used to treat blood clots as well as prevent them. It can cause birth defects in the baby. Therefore the benefit and risks should be weighed when it is to be used during pregnancy.

Phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine


Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that is used for short-term relief of nasal congestion from the common cold, sinusitis, upper respiratory allergies.

Streptomycin


Streptomycin use in pregnancy may cause hearing loss in to the unborn baby.

Fluconazole


Fluconazole is an antifungal drug that is used in the treatment of fungal infections. However, its use in pregnancy may harm the baby or cause spontaneous abortion

Thalidomide


Thalidomide is teratogenic, meaning, it can affect embryonic development. Taking this drug during pregnancy causes limb deformity known as amelia where a baby is born with a defective limb- some were born without limbs, loss thumb.
