  5. After Dedan Kimathi was captured and executed by the British in 1957, Mukami was imprisoned and tortured for her involvement in the struggle for independence.
  6. After Kenya gained independence in 1963, Mukami continued to work for social justice and human rights, particularly for women and children.
  7. In 2013, Mukami Kimathi received the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) award from the Kenyan government for her contributions to the country’s independence struggle.
