The lefties represent about 10% of the population worldwide and several studies have found a set of traits of personality that lefties tend to have, according to the newspaper Huffingpost.
Scientists are not entirely sure, but research points to a complex collaboration between genes and the environment that causes a person to be left-handed.
Therefore, we presented some facts you did not know about lefties:
- According to research published in the Wall Street Journal, left-handed people have a higher risk of brain and learning disorders. About 20% of people with schizophrenia predominantly use the left hand.
- Left-handed people are more likely to lean towards more artistic or innovative activities or careers, according to research published in the American Journal of Psychology. They are more attracted to careers in the arts, music, sports and the fields of information technology.
- According to a recent study presented at the Society of British Psychology, left-handed people tend to be more affected by fear of right-handers. After experiencing a terrible event, they exhibit similar behavior to post-traumatic stress disorder.
- According to a study published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases, left-handed people are more likely to have negative emotions, and it takes longer to assimilate and process their feelings.
- Left-handers have a greater tendency to doubt, feel more inhibited, shy and ashamed, explain scientists at the University of Abertay in Scotland.
- In the United States, left-handed people earn, on average, at 10% lower salary compared to right-handed people.
- August 13 is International Lefty Day, the date first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1992.
“The fact that lefties are less common means that they have a surprise effect,” says Montpellier University researcher Charlotte Faurier. In fact, some researchers believe that when it comes to the survival of the fittest, left-handers are ahead because of their essential traits.
