One may wonder why am talking of an exit interview and not a job interview. Well this is for the employers out there. Many people tend to ignore having exit interviews on their employees since they do not seem important because the employee is leaving the company but they are however quite important for the growth of the organization. Just as the initial job interview was important to be able to determine a good job candidate so is the exit interview for the sake of the company.
Here are reasons why you, as an employer should have exit interviews on your to be ex-employees.
Get the company’s strengths and weaknesses
Exit interviews are quite interesting crucial to improving the performance of the organization. This is because when an employee is leaving, they have conventional wisdom that they are not afraid to give out. Unlike initially when they were being employed or still working in the company, they will be able to point out the company’s weaknesses and strengths. This will enable the management to review the weaknesses and find was of eradicating them.
Point out the dead weights
When an employee is leaving an organization, he/she will be very open since they have nothing to lose. They might therefore point out the dead weights in the company. This will enable the company to investigate the dead weight employees and find ways of making them better or cut them loose if they do not register good results. This will in return boost the company’s operations and performance.
Offer solutions to problems
During an exit interview, an employee who is leaving the interview can easily give the problems that he/she and the other workers have been facing. He/she will be compelled to freely offer solutions to some problems that he/she has pointed out and this will make the organization a better working place.
Better management
An exit interview can enable the management to become better. This is because an exit-interviewee will give his/her opinion on management and how it could be made better. He/she will give an honest feedback on how the company’s management system is and this will give the employer a chance to make it better.
Endorse someone for a promotion
When it comes to asking another employee to endorse someone for a promotion, this would be a suicide mission. Ever heard of blowing one’s trumpet? Every person will want the promotion for them and might tarnish the other employees. However, a person who is resigning will have nothing to lose and might actually endorse a person who is truly hardworking and more deserving of the promotion.
- Find out if there is corruption
This goes without saying, if you want to find out the demons in your company, ask the guy who is leaving. The truth will come out.
