President Uhuru Kenyatta has whittled down the number of people he follows on his personal Twitter account to just 20, from a high of 150.

The President made the move last week, something that left tongues wagging on social media.

State senior director of digital communication Dennis Itumbi said only President Kenyatta can comment on the move.

“The President operates a personal account @UKenyatta; his office operates an institutional account @PresidentKE. Decisions taken on his personal account can only be answered by him,” he said.

“Twitter allows all of us who hold accounts on that platform to make changes as we deem fit. It is his account, he has a right to make decisions such as when to tweet, reply, retweet, follow or unfollow anyone.”

Currently, the head of state follows Presidents Barack Obama (US), John Dramani Mahama (Ghana), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Hage Geingob (Namibia), Jacob Zuma (South Africa), Yoweri Musveni (Uganda), François Hollande (France), John Magufuli (Tanzania) and Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.

Others are prime ministers David Cameron (Britain), Narendra Modi (India) and Abe Shinzo (Japan) besides Rwanda Presidency, Akinwumi A. Adesina (President of the African Development Bank), former US president Bill Clinton and First Lady of Kenya (Margaret Kenyatta).

Others are Deputy President William Ruto, State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu, UB40 and Olympic gold medalist Ezekiel Kemboi.
