The Federal Republic of Somalia has marked a historic milestone by becoming the newest member of the East African Community (EAC). In a ceremony held at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, Somalia deposited its instrument of ratification of the Treaty of Accession, solidifying its position as the bloc’s 8th Partner State.

The East African Community welcomes Somalia

Hon. Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, presented the instrument of ratification to the EAC Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, signalling the completion of the admission process in accordance with the EAC’s procedures.

In addition, Dr Mathuki emphasized the significance of Somalia’s inclusion, highlighting the opportunity for the country to contribute to the development of a roadmap for integration into the EAC. This roadmap will outline Somalia’s commitments to the Customs Union, Common Market, Monetary Union, and Political Federation.

Joining the EAC opens doors for Somalia to benefit from regional infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity, transportation links, and boosting trade. Dr. Mathuki underscored Somalia’s strategic location with its extensive coastline, presenting opportunities for blue economic resources utilization and increased intra-regional trade.

In his address, Hon. Haji Abdi expressed Somalia’s eagerness to leverage its resources and strategic location for the mutual benefit of the region. Additionally, he emphasized Somalia’s commitment to promoting sustainable development, job creation, and improved living standards for EAC citizens.

Following the deposit of the Instrument of Ratification, Somalia will receive formal notification of its full membership status from the Secretary-General. The country now has 12 months to domesticate the Treaty of Accession, giving it the force of law domestically.

Furthermore, Somalia is expected to designate a ministry to coordinate EAC matters, elect nine Members of Parliament to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), and appoint a Judge to the First Instance Division of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ).

Finally, as Somalia embarks on this new chapter of regional cooperation, it signals a promising future of collaboration, economic growth, and shared prosperity among East African nations.
