The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has taken a significant step towards modernizing tax compliance by introducing mandatory electronic invoicing for businesses across all sectors, including the Informal Sector and Small Businesses. This move mandates that all businesses electronically generate and transmit their invoices to KRA through the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS).

KRA launches eTIMS Lite

Specifically designed for non-VAT registered taxpayers, the newly launched eTIMS Lite platform provides a user-friendly interface for businesses to comply with electronic invoicing requirements seamlessly. Accessible through various channels such as the eCitizen platforms, including a USSD option by dialling *222# and a web-based solution at ecitizen.kra.go.ke, the system aims to simplify the compliance process for small-scale entrepreneurs.

KRA’s decision to enforce electronic invoicing underscores its commitment to enhancing transparency, curbing tax evasion, and streamlining tax collection processes. Through a statement issued on Monday, the Kenya Revenue Authority emphasized the vital role of electronic invoicing for businesses of all sizes, highlighting its potential to foster efficiency and accountability in the tax ecosystem.

“We are dedicated to assisting taxpayers in adhering to tax regulations,” stated a KRA spokesperson. “Initiatives like eTIMS Lite exemplify our commitment to supporting businesses while ensuring compliance with electronic invoicing requirements.”

Moreover, KRA has extended an invitation to taxpayers and representative bodies encountering challenges with compliance to engage with the authority for further assistance. Among the innovative solutions proposed by KRA is the concept of reverse invoicing, which allows sellers to authorize buyers to issue invoices on their behalf, offering greater flexibility in invoice management.

With the rollout of eTIMS Lite and ongoing engagement with stakeholders, KRA aims to facilitate a smooth transition to electronic invoicing while providing tailored support to meet the diverse needs of businesses in Kenya. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the digitization of tax processes, signalling a transformative shift towards more efficient and transparent tax administration.
