Nairobi Floods saga
According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the officer had already rescued four individuals, including three women and a child, who were trapped between a slab connecting their business stalls and the pedestrian walkway. After successfully saving them, the officer returned to secure the stalls. However, a sudden collapse of the slab under the force of the floodwaters resulted in the officer being swept away, along with his rifle, an AK47 loaded with ammunition.
Nairobi’s Police Boss, Adamson Bungei, confirmed the incident and announced that investigations are underway. Despite extensive search efforts, the officer’s body has yet to be recovered, and his rifle remains missing.
Three others lose lives in floods
This tragic event occurred amidst a series of flood-related fatalities across Nairobi. Three other individuals lost their lives due to the heavy downpour, including two boda boda riders in the Eastlands area. The torrential rains also wreaked havoc on transportation systems, causing severe traffic jams on major roads such as Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Lang’ata Road, and within the Nairobi CBD.
The disruptions extended to the Kenya Railways service, which reported significant disturbances in its operations due to the relentless rainfall. The combination of flooded streets and halted train services created chaos and inconvenience for residents and commuters alike.
The loss of the police officer underscores the dangers faced by emergency responders and the challenges posed by extreme weather events. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the risks involved in serving and protecting the community, especially during natural disasters.
As Nairobi grapples with the aftermath of these tragic incidents and works towards recovery, authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and preparedness during periods of heavy rainfall to prevent further loss of life and property damage.
