Kenyan gospel singer Silas Mwenda has carved out a remarkable career in the United States, but his journey to international acclaim was far from easy. In a recent interview, Mwenda shared how a bold decision and the support of Ogopa Deejays’ co-founder Lucas Bikedo changed the course of his life and career.

Silas Mwenda made history as the first gospel artiste to be signed by Ogopa Deejays, the iconic Kenyan music label famed for launching some of East Africa’s biggest secular stars. His journey began humbly while he was still a student, driven by an unwavering passion for music. Mwenda would often visit Ogopa Studios in South B after school, hoping for a breakthrough. It was here that fate introduced him to luminaries like Nameless, Wahu, and Mustafa, who offered warmth and encouragement despite his newcomer status.

The defining moment came when Mwenda met Lucas Bikedo, the co-founder of Ogopa Deejays. After listening to a demo Mwenda sang on the spot, Lucas was so impressed that he offered a five-year recording contract—an unprecedented move for a gospel artist at the label. Mwenda recalls, “Lucas looked at me and said, ‘Good voice, Silas. You also seem very marketable… I believe in you.’ I was amazed.” He praises Lucas as a genius producer whose skill helped transform Ogopa Deejays into a powerhouse of musical excellence.

Mwenda’s debut single, Nakuhitaji, was originally slated for an Ogopa compilation but was held back to focus on a full album. Though it took almost three years to gain traction, the song ultimately earned him a nomination and win at the Talanta Awards in the US in the category of Best Upcoming Artiste (Non-US Based). Mwenda fondly recalls the award ceremony in Seattle as “unbelievable” and “a dawn of a new season.”

Now permanently based in the US, Silas Mwenda has broadened his career beyond gospel music. He is signed with Wilhelmina USA as an actor and commercial model and represents brands like Canadian fashion label Duer and Immersive Game Box USA as a brand ambassador. He remains deeply grateful for the journey that took him from South B studios to international stages.

Adding to his list of milestones, Mwenda recently attended the 2025 Grammy Awards. Surrounded by music legends such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Kendrick Lamar in the VIP section, he describes the experience as life-changing—a major turning point in his artistic journey.

Silas Mwenda’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and the power of taking bold chances. His rise from local gospel singer to internationally recognized artiste and model continues to inspire many aspiring musicians in Kenya and beyond.
