A Chinese woman who sought medical attention after developing eye problems depicted by itchy symptoms was shocked when doctors told her that she has had 100 living parasites in her eye lashes.
The news published by ‘The Mail Online’, notes that the woman, only known as Ms Xu, told doctors in Wuhan in the central Chinese province of Hubei that she had suffered itchy, red eyes for two years but had simply got used to the condition.
She also admitted that she had never washed her pillow for 5 years, the last time she washed it was in 2012.
But within the last two years, the woman admitted to having treated the illness with over the counter drugs, which gave her little help.
And the situation worsened that the deposits of her crusty eyelids could not let the eyelids open at her wish.
Doctors found then, 100 eyelash mites on her eyelids, a single follicle was home to a colony of 10 mites.
Doctors said lack of proper sanitation , washing of her pillow and proper aeration of her bed room led to a good breeding ground of the mites.
She was diagnosed with blepharitis and conjunctivitis, inflammation of the base of the eyelashes and of the eye.
She reportedly made a full recovery after treatment.
Two species of eyelash mite are found in humans, Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, with some studies suggesting that almost every adult is infected with at least a few of them.
