The eldest son of the deceased former Cuban president Fidel Castro, Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, 68, committed suicide today in Havana, according to state television on the island.

Castro Díaz-Balart, the only child born of the marriage of Fidel Castro with Mirtha Díaz-Balart and who on the island was popularly known as “Fidelito”, was in a “deep depression” for several months, according to the same source.

The deceased, a nuclear physicist, was a scientific advisor to the Council of State of Cuba, the highest governing body of the island, and vice president of the Academy of Sciences of the Caribbean country.

“The Doctor of Science Fidel Angel Castro Diaz-Balart, who had been seen by a group of doctors for several months due to a deep depression, attempted against his life on the morning of today, the first of February,” Granma reported. , the official press organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba

He adds: “As part of his treatment, he initially required a hospitalization regimen and then continued with outpatient follow-up during his social reincorporation.”
