last mile

President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the Last Mile Connectivity Project, an initiative geared towards increasing electricity access to Kenyans across the country. The number of schools now connected to electricity is 20,575 from 8,203 in 2013. By the end of June, all 22,175 schools will be connected. Over the last two years, there has been an increase of 1,041,576 new customers to Kenya Power, raising the number of customers to 3,300,467; representing a growth of 46%. The cost for installation of electricity has now dropped from KSh35,000 down to only KSh15,000 to speed up my Government’s agenda to have at least 70 per cent of Kenyan households connected to electricity by 2017. Those who cannot pay the KSh15,000 at one go will still get connected and have the option of making payment by instalments through their bills. The decision to reduce the cost of installation was reached after the progress that my Government has achieved in increasing power generation and is aimed at allowing all Kenyans access electricity. This implies :

1. All households and businesses near a transformer to be connected

2. Only one customer near a transformer needs to apply, the rest will be automatically connected

3. Customers will no longer queue for service, Kenya Power will just connect them.

4. Those who cannot afford to pay for wiring will get a ready box with a switch.

5. Connection Cost has come down from Shs.35,000 to 15,000

6. You can pay by instalments ranging from 2 months to 5 years.

7. The instalments will e charged on your monthly electricity bill.

8. Connections will increase from 35% to 75% in two years.
