An eight year old pupil has been left nursing serious injuries at home after he was violently beaten by teachers for ‘stealing’ a smartphone which belonged to one of the teachers.
The victim who is a class two pupil suffered severe ribcage, head and back injuries after the cruel teachers descended on him with blows and punches as they tried to extort information from him concerning the ‘missing’ phone.
The pupil whom we shall name ‘Isaac’ in this story turned as ‘key suspect’ when a female teacher reported that her phone went missing in the class after a lesson.
It is believed the victim who was seen next to the teacher’s desk was summoned to the staffroom before cruel incident happened.
While still beating up the little unfortunate boy, the missing phone was ranged and found ringing in the teacher’s bag in the staffroom- apparently the phone had been forgotten by the teacher in the staffroom before the poor allegations.
His mother, Peres Chasi says that the boy has not been able to take the end year exams, he can barely walk on his own and keeps complaining of severe body pains.
‘The kid came home and could not eat, sleep or do revision for their ongoing end year exams,’ Mrs. Chasi said stating that the boy is in fear of victimization from teachers if he reported the case.
The mother who is looking for justice is in fear of her kid being expelled from school.
‘The incident happened on Monday 15th when the boy came home in great pains but lied to me he had ‘malaria’, I gave him anti-malaria drugs but it was not working then on Thursday I learned from his schoolmates of what had caused his pains,’ the mother said.
The mother also noted that the boy cannot slip on one of his ribs, complained of his back pains and can barely walk on his own. He cannot eat food or talk properly after being traumatized by the shocking incident.
‘The teachers did not even apologize to the kid nor call the parent over the issue, they just went about their business and my kid is left in great pain,’ the mother of the pupil lamented.
Since Monday the boy has not received any medical attention and his pain keeps growing, the mother is appealing for help and justice for the innocent kid who schools at Emukhunzulu Primary School, Kakamega County.
Mrs. Violet Kenyakisa- school head, when contacted said that she was not aware of the incident but ‘promised’ to pursue the matter to its core.
Corporal punishment in Kenyan school is against the law but unfortunately teachers are still administering it on a daily basis. It only gets to the public when a kid is severely injured or when precious life is lost.
In February 2017, a teacher named Mr Venezio Njuguna Maina was arrested by police after beating up 14 year old Joy Wagithi to death in Laikipia County.
The victim from Mukandamia Primary School in Solio Village Six succumbed to her injuries three days later after the violent incident.
Few weeks ago on September 22nd, 2018 Mohammed Juma aged 14 years succumbed to death while she was being rushed to hospital after she was caned by her teacher in Mnagoni Primary School in Bamba, Ganze constituency
The suspect Mr. David Katama was later put in police custody
The Constitution emphasizes that every child has a right to be protected from abuse, neglect and harmful practices. Equally important to note, corporal punishment was outlawed in schools.
And so any teacher who administers corporal punishment on a learner is breaking the law and should be sanctioned severely.
Even in extreme cases of student indiscipline, mechanisms exist for dealing with that.
