The death of veteran radio presenter Edward Kwach on April 28, 2025, shocked the nation. Known for his iconic voice and commanding presence on air, Kwach was a household name in Kenyan broadcasting. While many fans remember him for his time at top radio stations like Kiss FM, Capital FM, and Spice FM, there are many lesser-known details about his life that paint a fuller picture of the man behind the mic.

Here are five interesting things you probably didn’t know about Edward Kwach.

  1. He Studied Law Before Entering Media
Edward Kwach originally pursued a career in law. He studied at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa and graduated in 1995 with a degree in law. Coming from a family with a strong legal background—his father was the late Justice Richard Otieno Kwach—he was expected to follow in his footsteps. However, his passion for communication and storytelling drew him into radio, where he found his true calling.
  2. He Was Once Engaged to a Former Model
Kwach lived a very private life, especially when it came to matters of the heart. In 2014, he was briefly in the limelight after getting engaged to Dee, a former model. The relationship made headlines but later ended quietly. After the engagement, Kwach maintained a low profile, rarely sharing personal details with the public. This discretion set him apart in a media world where personal lives often become public property.
  3. He Mentored Young Broadcasters
Kwach was passionate about nurturing young talent. In 2016, he made a surprising decision to leave Nairobi and relocate to Kisumu, where he helped establish Urban Radio. While many viewed the move as a step back from the limelight, Kwach saw it as an opportunity to uplift new voices and promote regional storytelling. His mentorship shaped many careers and expanded the reach of quality radio beyond Kenya’s capital.
  4. He Was a Celebrated Voiceover Artist
In addition to his radio shows, Kwach’s voice was in high demand for commercial work. His deep baritone was instantly recognizable and gave him a strong edge in the world of voiceovers. From radio ads to documentaries, his voice became one of Kenya’s most trusted and engaging tones. Fellow presenter and cousin Nick Odhiambo once revealed that the two regularly competed for top voiceover gigs.
  5. He Remained Humble Despite Fame
Edward Kwach was admired not only for his broadcasting skills but also for his humility. Despite his fame and long list of accomplishments, he remained approachable and grounded. Colleagues describe him as kind, generous, and genuinely passionate about media. His commitment to his work and to uplifting others left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

Edward Kwach may be gone, but his voice, legacy, and influence will continue to inspire future generations of Kenyan broadcasters. His life was proof that passion, humility, and a willingness to take risks can lead to a remarkable and unforgettable career.
