Sahle-Work Zewde was elected by Ethiopian members of Parliament as the country’s first ever president.
Zewde who was an experienced UN diplomat was elected to the ceremonial position moments after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had elected a large number of women into his cabinet.
She spoke on the need of peace after her voted had been prompted by the unexpected resignation of her predecessor, Mulatu Teshome
