Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has expressed interest in helping Kaluma Boy, a young man from Othaya, Nyeri, who has captured national attention for his dedication to caring for his father, a stroke patient.
Kaluma Boy documented his year-long journey caring for his ailing father on TikTok, sharing the high costs and challenges of medical treatments, including physiotherapy. His story resonated with thousands of Kenyans, especially the Gen Z community, who rallied online under the hashtag #KalumaDay to support him and his father.
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the online movement translated into a real-world event. Thousands of Kenyans traveled to Kaluma Boy’s home in Othaya, arriving in buses and on motorcycles to show their support. The fundraiser raised significant funds, and donors pledged to provide supplies and build the family a three-bedroom house. Kaluma Boy thanked supporters and urged young people not to abandon their parents.
Following the fundraising event, MP Peter Kaluma offered his support. He questioned why the public had mobilized to help Kaluma Boy when he, as a capable lawmaker, could assist. “Then there is Kaluma Boy. Why is he being helped by all Kenyans when I am alive and able? Come my boy,” he wrote on social media.
The post generated mixed reactions. While some praised his willingness to help, others criticized him for intervening after the public had already stepped in. Many highlighted that grassroots support and social solidarity had already provided substantial assistance.
Peter Kaluma’s offer emphasizes the potential role of elected officials in supporting citizens beyond digital campaigns. His willingness to step in may complement the ongoing support for Kaluma Boy and his family, ensuring that the young caregiver and his father have continued access to medical care and improved living conditions.
