Do you want to get a unique insight into the foreign service, and learn more about Kenya and Somalia? The Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi is offering an internship in autumn 2023, starting in September 2023. Application deadline 2 June 2023.
The purpose of the internship scheme is to spread knowledge about and interest in the work in the foreign service. As an intern, you will gain a good insight into the embassy’s many tasks and tasks and several aspects of Norway’s cooperation with the UN (UNEP and UN Habitat), Kenya and Somalia. The tasks will include political and economic reporting, information and communication work, aid management, multilateral work, business promotion, facilitation of visits/events, as well as administrative and consular tasks.
Nairobi is one of the UN capitals and several UN and multilateral organizations are based in Nairobi. Norway has broad cooperation with the UN, Kenya and Somalia. The interns will be given particular responsibility for strengthening our internal and external communication around this collaboration.
Qualifications
It is a prerequisite that the applicant meets the requirements for student interns that are described on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website , and accepts the conditions mentioned there.
In the assessment of candidates, emphasis will be placed on:
- started higher education in social sciences, economics or legal subjects
- relevant academic background and interest in foreign policy
- knowledge of Kenyan and/or Somali politics, culture and society is an advantage
- experience from or interest in aid/development cooperation is an advantage
- personal initiative
- analytical properties
- good abilities for both collaboration and independent work
- experience with social media and online publishing
- very good written presentation skills in Norwegian
- very good English skills (written and spoken)
Scholarships and practical conditions
The traineeship lasts for six months, starting in September 2023.
The trainee scheme is unpaid, but the trainee receives a stipend which currently amounts to NOK 14,000 per month. The scholarship can be combined with support from Lånekassen. The intern must cover his own travel and living expenses, and is himself responsible for obtaining accommodation.
Applicants must be prepared that changes in the Travel Council for Kenya may result in the offer of internships having to be withdrawn. Any expenses incurred prior to joining will not be covered in such situations.
