In a recent interview, Kapedo, a former spoken word artist on the popular Churchill Show, shared his transformative journey into photography, which began during the unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Faced with the shutdown of live performances and the uncertainty of the future, Kapedo contemplated returning to his village. However, a friend’s encouragement sparked a new passion that has since flourished into a successful career.

Finding New Beginnings

When the pandemic led to the closure of Churchill Show, Kapedo found himself at a crossroads. “I was thinking of going back to the village,” he revealed. The enforced break from performing left him searching for new avenues to express his creativity and earn an income. It was during this period that a friend lent him a camera, igniting his interest in photography.

Despite his initial hesitation, Kapedo embraced this new challenge. “I hadn’t started photography until COVID-19 came. After that, I was like, what was the next step?” he explained. He began learning the craft, focusing on how to capture the beauty of everyday moments and the essence of people.

Bridging Two Art Forms

Kapedo describes his transition into photography not as a departure from spoken word but as an extension of his artistry. “I can’t say I have made the transition fully because I’m still telling stories through pictures,” he explained. He views poetry and photography as complementary arts, both essential to his identity as a storyteller.

By 2021, Kapedo officially launched his photography career, inspired by a desire to encourage others to pursue their dreams. His work quickly gained attention, particularly through viral behind-the-scenes videos where he showcases how to pose for stunning photos.

Client Experience and Rates

Kapedo’s unique approach to photography emphasizes the experience he provides to his clients. “I’m attracting people by being excellent with what I am doing,” he stated. He charges KSh 100,000 and above for his sessions, which include the services of two photographers. This investment reflects his commitment to delivering high-quality, memorable experiences rather than merely selling photographs.

Kapedo’s dedication to his craft is evident as he continually seeks to improve and innovate. “I still do my job as a beginner… I am like a baby, and there is so much for me to learn,” he acknowledged.

A Lesson in Resilience

Kapedo’s journey highlights the power of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. Rather than succumbing to the challenges posed by the pandemic, he turned a difficult situation into an opportunity for growth. His story serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that passion and determination can lead to new horizons, even in the most uncertain times.

As Kapedo continues to make strides in the photography industry, his evolution from a spoken word artist to a sought-after photographer underscores the limitless possibilities that arise when one is willing to embrace change and pursue their true calling.
