Kenya Airways has increased flight frequency and upgraded aircraft on its Kisumu route to meet the surge in travel demand following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. The decision comes after the airline repatriated the late leader’s remains from India on the symbolic flight “RAO001”, a gesture that deeply moved Kenyans across the country.

The national carrier confirmed that it will operate additional flights and deploy larger aircraft to accommodate mourners traveling to Kisumu and the surrounding Nyanza region for the burial. In a statement, the airline said, “We’ve increased our flight frequency to Kisumu over the weekend to accommodate the high travel demand. We remain committed to ensuring seamless travel for all our guests.”

Starting Friday, October 17, Kenya Airways introduced two new flights: KQ656 departing Nairobi at 1330 HRS and KQ658 departing at 1900 HRS. On Saturday, October 18, an extra morning flight, KQ650, will leave at 0650 HRS. The 0805 HRS service, KQ654, will now operate with a larger Boeing 737 to expand passenger capacity.

The upgrades will continue into Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, October 19, both KQ654 at 0805 HRS and KQ671 at 1900 HRS will use Boeing 737 aircraft. On Monday, KQ654 and KQ670 will also be serviced by Boeing 737s. These adjustments reflect the airline’s effort to handle the high number of travelers expected during the mourning period.

The special “RAO001” flight that brought Raila Odinga’s body home on Thursday has become a historic moment in Kenya’s aviation record. The use of the personalized call sign was widely praised as a symbolic tribute to Odinga’s legacy and his decades of contribution to the country’s political and social development.

Raila Odinga, who died at 80, is remembered as a reformist, freedom fighter, and key architect of Kenya’s democracy. His death has united the country in grief, prompting thousands to plan travel to his ancestral home to pay their last respects.

The move by Kenya Airways ensures that dignitaries, family members, and citizens can travel efficiently to Nyanza for the final rites. It also helps address the logistical challenges caused by the sharp increase in domestic air travel following his passing.

Kenya Airways’ decision to honor Raila Odinga through both symbolic and practical measures reflects the deep respect the nation holds for one of its most influential leaders.
