After extensive negotiations spanning several months, Kenya and Tanzania have reached an agreement on three crucial trade deals aimed at dismantling various trade barriers between the two East African nations. The breakthrough came as a result of collaborative efforts and a shared commitment to fostering stronger economic ties.
The first significant development is Kenya’s decision to resume tea exports to Tanzania, a move that is expected to not only boost revenue for Kenya but also benefit Tanzanian consumers and businesses. This decision follows thorough discussions and mutual understanding between the trade teams of both countries, which convened in Kisumu on March 22, 2023.

Furthermore, Kenya has agreed to streamline the clearance process for timber and Konyagi imports from Tanzania, addressing previous concerns raised by Tanzanian authorities regarding the detention of these goods by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
In a statement issued by Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano on March 22, it was announced that out of the 68 initial trade issues, 56 have been successfully resolved, marking significant progress in addressing trade challenges between the two nations. The statement also highlighted the comprehensive harmonization of levies, fees, charges, and other trade-related conditions as part of the agreement.
Moreover, both countries have committed to establishing a monitoring team to ensure the effective implementation of the deals signed during the Kisumu talks. This proactive approach demonstrates a shared determination to uphold the terms of the agreements and ensure their successful execution.
Cabinet Secretary Miano expressed optimism about the positive impact of these trade pacts on the economies of Kenya and Tanzania. She emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and collaboration to further enhance trade relations and promote economic growth in the region.
The resumption of tea exports to Tanzania is particularly significant for Kenya, given that tea is one of its top revenue generators. With an estimated export value of Ksh200 billion in 2022, Kenya’s tea industry plays a pivotal role in its economy, with key export destinations including Pakistan, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
The anticipated increase in tea exports to Tanzania, valued at Ksh70 billion (USD488 million) in 2023, underscores the potential for further growth and prosperity resulting from these trade agreements. As both countries reaffirm their commitment to fostering economic cooperation, the stage is set for a new chapter of mutually beneficial trade relations between Kenya and Tanzania.
