Kenyans are abuzz with excitement following the unexpected but long-awaited reunion of Jamaican dancehall icons Vybz Kartel and Mavado. Once fierce rivals whose lyrical feud ignited passionate followings worldwide — including in Kenya — the two were spotted embracing warmly during a recent music video shoot featuring Buju Banton and DJ Khaled. The moment, captured in behind-the-scenes footage, has reignited nostalgia among fans who remember the height of the Gaza versus Gully rivalry.

The sight of the two former adversaries smiling and conversing like old friends sent shockwaves across the dancehall community, with Kenyan fans at the heart of the celebration. For many, this was more than just a celebrity reunion — it was a powerful moment of healing, especially for those who lived through the feud’s intensity in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

The Gaza-Gully conflict was one of the most defining rivalries in dancehall history, with Vybz Kartel representing Gaza and Mavado leading Gully. Their lyrical war produced a string of diss tracks, street anthems, and diehard fan bases that became deeply entrenched in identity and youth culture — even extending far beyond Jamaica’s borders.

In Kenya, the rivalry was so intense that it influenced local youth culture, music choices, and in some areas, even spurred the formation of youth gangs, most notably the notorious Gaza gang in Nairobi. At the peak of the beef, communities, schools, and social gatherings often saw heated debates and passionate arguments over who reigned supreme.

The reconciliation between Kartel and Mavado was first sparked in 2009 during a government-sponsored peace concert in Jamaica. However, this latest interaction, which took place on an international music video set, appears more personal and genuine — suggesting that the artists have truly moved beyond their differences.

DJ Khaled, who shared the reunion on Instagram, teased fans with updates about the project. “Historic collaboration alert. Unity is strength! This collaboration is 97% done, working on the final part. I don’t want this to be a secret; this will be more of a gift to the world. This is for the culture,” he posted, alongside photos of Kartel and Mavado together with Buju Banton and Bounty Killa.

Kenyan fans flooded social media to express their joy, with many reminiscing about the old days of dancehall supremacy battles. One fan wrote, “Legendary moment. One Gully Gad, one Gaza Don,” while another added, “The enmity we had back in high school because of these two. This is surreal.” The reunion has not only rekindled fond memories but also offered a moment of reflection on how far both artists — and their fans — have come.

In the midst of the celebration, fans are also keeping an eye on Vybz Kartel’s health. The incarcerated star, recently released from prison, has been battling Graves’ disease, a serious autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid. Recent photos of him showed visible symptoms, including facial swelling and eye protrusion, sparking concern. Kartel’s team confirmed he is focused on recovery and hopes to receive proper medical care outside the prison system.

Despite these challenges, the prospect of new music from the two titans has created massive anticipation. With DJ Khaled and Buju Banton involved, the track is expected to be more than just a collaboration — it’s shaping up to be a cultural milestone, uniting fans across the globe who were once divided by one of dancehall’s most legendary rivalries.

For Kenyan dancehall lovers, the reunion marks a beautiful full-circle moment — proof that time heals, music unites, and legends evolve.
